Why "You're Right" Is the Worst Response

When someone vents, they don't just want agreement. They want empathy, presence, and the feeling that you're on their side.

Have you ever had this kind of conversation?

Partner: My boss yelled at me today for no reason. I'm so frustrated. You: Yeah, that sucks. Partner: And he didn't even know the full situation before blaming me. You: Oh, I see. Partner: I honestly think I did a good job! You: Yeah... you're right.

And then you wait. You watch their face darken until they finally say, "You just don't get me."

Sound familiar?

Here's the thing — when someone is venting, they usually aren't looking for solutions or validation. They just want to feel heard, understood, and supported.

"You're right" sounds dismissive, like you're checking a box instead of actually listening.

A better approach:

"That's so unfair! Your boss didn't even hear your side?" "Tell me everything — I'm on your team here." "I would be furious too. You have every right to feel that way."

See the difference? It's still agreement, but it's empathetic agreement. It creates connection instead of distance.

Next time your partner is upset, hold off on the advice. First, let them know you're in their corner. Once they've vented, you can ask, "Want help figuring out what to do?"

Remember: empathize first, solve second. That's the real winning move.
